What’s worse than playing sick nurse? My toddler came down with a nasty flu for a week. And then I caught a horrible cold in the midst of that. Thankfully, I was only down and out for a couple of days. I knew of some who were affected for two weeks!
Want in on my secret weapon? I have three. All drool-worthy.
It’s been eight days.
How’re you feeling about your 2014 goals? Killin’ it so far? If you’ve been on your A game, then keep rockin’!
But let’s keep it real, if you’re human, you’re probably gonna lose steam at some point. Apparently, only 8% of people keep New Year’s resolutions. So, if you feel your enthusiasm dipping and your goals slipping away, you’re not alone.
We’ve all heard about the power of words; but how conscious are you about your choice of words, the way you use them and the effect they have on your world.
Online and offline, without awareness, words can drain your energy, hurt others, and make you ugly (ya, ugly. Don’t believe me? There’s proof below).
If you wanna use words as a tool for human connection, inspiration, creativity, and problem-solving…read on.
The Do’s & Don’ts Of Word Usage
1. Don’t gossip. There’s nothing worse than using other people’s sad stories as entertainment.
Do discuss ideas. The more wacky and “unrealistic” the better.
So, you may have noticed that the last time I blogged was …uh…Mother’s Day…
I have thought of my readers and my blog every single day since then. I struggled with the fact that I deserted you for a whole season. But I’ve come to trust that this break was so very necessary for myself, my family, natnanton.com and the cosmos.
I feel like the progress made in these few months that have passed is what I’ve been gearing up for in the last three decades.
I’ve been busy doing some major demolition work; I finally tackled the gigantor brick wall build-up of unresolved emotions.
What? You’ve never heard of kitchenophobia? Maybe you’re not familiar with medical terms. Kitchenophobia is the name for the extreme aversion to meal preparation and cooking.
I casually mentioned that I don’t cook in a recent post. The truth is, I have a serious case of kitchenophobia. I’m like a headless chicken in the kitchen. Imagine how that feels.
A Positive Body Image Starts With Mom
How many women do you know who are absolutely in love with their body?
<Cue crickets and sarcastic cackles>
Now, how many women do you know who complain about their body? Hide behind clothes? Wish they could add or remove certain body parts? Maybe even hate their body?
The list is long, eh?
Having finally reached the point of loving my body, I can now see that my previous perspective led me towards unhealthy relationships, bad decisions, and an overall low quality of life.
It’s one thing to go through that yourself. But it’s a whole ‘nother level of pain when it comes to your daughter. So how do you raise a girl who celebrates her body?
You know those people who win every radio, Facebook, blog contest out there? Since you clicked on this post, I’m going to guess you’re not one of them.
Good news: you can be.
Luck isn’t all chance. A big chunk of the equation is how you’re holding up in your role as co-creator of your world.
Sounds fluffy, but take it from me. I was so used to winning nothing…until around a year or so ago when my lucky streak started.
In the last year alone, I have won gym memberships, yoga passes, conference tickets, jewelry, clothing, books and more. And I swear, I’m not that girl who spends her weekend hunting down online giveaways and spending my savings on lottery tickets.
Speaking of, last week I won the lottery! AY-OH! The lottery was for a community garden plot. It may not be a million dollars, but to me, it’s a big deal. With 200 people on the waitlist and a 5-year turnover, I’m pretty flippin’ happy about winning a plot.
Now let me share what allowed me to make the shift from being luckless to inviting luck into my orbit.
A Busy Mom’s Guide To Giving D.I.Y Gifts
You know that moment when your heart explodes because your kid eagerly gives you her gift, her work of heart — your portrait, in scribbles and stick limbs? That moment is the inspiration behind my manifesto for handmade giving, shared in my latest guest post on ethicalDeal.com.
Handmade gifts trump mall-finds any day. But as romantic as it sounds, the idea of making gifts scares away busy moms. You might be turned off by the thought of complicated projects and a time-consuming process.
I recall going through life with so much to say but holding it all in. And when I spoke, I would habitually say what I thought people wanted to hear, always choosing to bite my tongue to avoid stepping on toes.
Funny enough, I remember getting my toes trampled on and being the one to apologize. I was hit by a speeding car…at a pedestrian crossing… in a school zone…and I apologized.
I’m telling you, my vocal chords did their own thing.
Things finally turned around when my daughter was born. As her role model and spokesperson, I thought I’d help her find her voice. Instead, she helped me discover mine.
When was the last time you felt like you were really living it up, achieving your dreams, stepping up to the challenge? Taking care of Junior doesn’t have to mean that you’re days of fun are over. But I get it. Kids require energy–a lot of it.
And moms are lacking sleep, feeling wiped out and exhausted. When you’re feeling like that, the most you can do is get through your daily routine. Don’t expect to “carpe diem” when you’re wearing your crankypants with your eyes half-open.
Solution? Cold showers.
Let me tell you about the experience that opened my eyes to the power of the cold shower.
I live on Canada’s west coast, where the winters are mild, but the ocean is freezing. Only the crazies can be found taking a dip in the pacific ocean at winter time. Well, call me crazy. On January 1, 2013, I dove in. I participated in the Polar Bear Swim along with thousands of others.
This is a big deal for a girl who never sets more than a toe into water that isn’t steaming.
