In 2010, Silentnight had everyone talking about the “shocking” survey that showed that new parents lose an average of six months of sleep during the first two years of their child’s life. The first time I heard those numbers, I had not yet become a mother. That must be a gross exaggeration, I thought.
Fast forward two years.
There are three types of moms in this world: those who love to run, those who dream of running, and those who think runners are a cult of crazies who enjoy torturing themselves.
This previous-dreamer-turned-lover-of-running, is about to convince all the nonbelievers to hit the ground running.
A Message From Oprah Found In A Runners Playlist
Training for a half-marathon is no joke. Especially for a first-timer like me. Twenty-one km is a great distance to cover by foot and the only thing that keeps me going on the 9-km training runs, is my playlist.
Have you ever struggled to keep a fitness routine alive and kicking? Your on-again-off-again relationship with your workout routine may be because you’re following advice given by experts in magazines, online…etc. While the pros may know their stuff, the one thing they can’t tell you, is what works for YOU.
As a mother, you do everything you can to make sure your children are happy and healthy. You feed them. You bathe them. You make sure they are well-rested. And of course, you shower them with kindness and compassion on difficult days.
As much as you’d love to care for them forever, at some point, your little birds will leave the nest.

“Its Not the Mountain We Conquer, But Ourselves” -Unknown
I have no desire to climb Mt. Everest. I did however, climb Grouse Mountain. Some stats about the hike, affectionately named the Grouse Grind:
2830 stairs (more like fireplace logs jammed into the dirt…not the nice sturdy cement ones you find in your office building)
2800 ft. elevation gain
Average time: 1.5 hours
My goal : 1 hour (a random number based on my competitive impulse)
A photo of my husband and I post-Grind…hence me having to lean on him for support.
It was grueling. But so worth it! More than elevation, I gained insight into the internal battles we are up against when we challenge ourselves.
