Momcafe’s Lion’s Lair: A Rip-Roaring Good Time
Yesterday Momcafe Vancouver had their own version of the popular TV show “Dragon’s Den”, cleverly coined “The Lion’s Lair”. The four business savvy “Lions” have impressive resumes and a ton of great advice. They were: Chris Flett, a.k.a The Ghost Ceo, Judy Brooks, Chief of Staff at Nurse Next Door, Michelle Kelsey, owner of Nannies on Call, and Betty Macleod, RBC Small Business Banking. Owners of Notebook Weddings, Saadia Organics, and Foodie Tour were the brave mothers who pitched their business models to the Lions. The ladies awaited the pounce, the claws, and the sharp teeth. But, to my relief, and to theirs I’m sure, the Lions were more like Mufasa than Scarface. The panel gave advice with “out-of-the-box” thinking; they offered business contacts; and they made sure to recognize the good business practices that each entrepreneur was already doing. I almost jumped up with with an impromptu Tutu Mama pitch (lie). Instead, I decided to stick to live-tweeting. Here’s my wordle of the tweets and notes from the event.
I admire all four ladies for being vulnerable, not only in front of the who’s who of the business world, but 30+ moms in addition to that. Nerves aside, it was a good move on their part. Each of them got invaluable advice to apply to their business. Joel Amzil and Ainslie Koopmans from Saadia Organics were voted as having the best pitch, both by the Lions and the moms. These two ladies have got it going on! They had a smashing product display, a great story, and they were cool as cucumbers up there. You couldn’t see any worry lines on those foreheads. Although that may be attributed to their product: 100% pure Argan oil, the remedy for every blemish, pimple, and wrinkle.
With a beautiful view, a great venue, childcare and lots of inspiration, I’m hoping Momcafe will host another Lion’s Lair event soon!
